80's Flashbacks
Email Article Before I get into the topic of the day I wanted to direct your attention to the library I've added to the site.
I'm a major, full on book junkie and since I'm always intrigued by the reading choices of others, I figured I would share my own. My library is a gaggle of my favorite books and it will be updated regularly with new selections.
So, I was over reading at Jezebel today and one of the posts was asking readers what the first album was that made them fall in love with music and I commented that my love began with all things Prince.

I was a total Prince groupie when Purple Rain came out and that was in 1984.
I was born in 1980 so you do the math.
And not only was I fascinated and in love with Prince, I was also enamored with just about every song he produced for other artists...Morris Day and The Time, Sheila E, Sheena Easton, etc..
1985 rolled around when I discovered Vanity 6 and the best song ever made, "Nasty Girl".
Now, my research (Wikipedia) tells me that "Nasty Girl" came out in 1982 but I was only 2 then, so obviously I wasn't up to speed with the music scene yet.
Anyway I discovered it at age 5 and it became my signature song. Maybe some of you were singing "Old McDonald" or "If you're Happy and You Know It" in kindergarten, but I was the kid singing "Toooooonight, I'm living in a fantasy, My own little nasty world. Tonight, don't you want to come with me, do you think I'm a nasty girl?!"
I even had the gyrations to go with it.
My Catholic school teacher Miss Collins was far from impressed but hey, that was her problem.
I was hot stuff.
Oh and it didn't end there.
Purple Rain had wide ranging influence on me from the Prince hits to the cheesy number Apollonia performed in the movie, "Sex Shooter".
Yep, go right ahead and picture my 5 year-old ass singing "I'm a sex shooter, shooting love in your direction" and "Come on kiss the gun" eleventy billion times.
And no one could get me to stop. Hahahaha *evil cackle*
But hey, that's when I uncovered my talent for singing and obsession with music. My teen years after that were filled with singing at school functions, cheesetastic local pageants, and talent shows. I was in a teen performing arts group in high school, and that led to my stint as a back up singer in college.
It all began with "Nasty Girl".
Most great things do in my experience.
Anyway, what were your musical obsessions in the 80's or 70's or whenever you grew up? I'm dying to know. Pleeeease tell me your stories!!!

I don't know if I'm the right person to comment on this, since prior to 1990 I was singing songs in the church choir! I remember hearing songs by Boys II Men in high school and lots of "I'll Make Love to You" serenades going on in my boarding school.
My year of liberation began in 1999 when my sister recorded a tape of top 40s in the USA. It had songs like "Hit me Baby one more time" and Genie in a Bottle, and the top songs from every single boy band. We must have listened to that tape over and over and over again until it whorled and the rotation is still in my mind.
Having personal anthems started for me with Destiny's Child...Survivor, Bootylicious etc. Like I said...I'm new to music, but my tastes have broadened significantly to include Norah Jones, Kate Boreilles, Hope and the husky melodies that Jewel and Sara bring. On my pissed off days, I love my girl power anthems like PCD, Pink, RiRi etc.
Music is indeed the great unifier, but I would describe my origins as a pop head all the way.
For me it was Paula Abdul. She is a terrible mess now but in 1989 she was on fiyah.
In like 5th grade I made my mom buy me those "dance reebok" shoes she had out cuz I thought they would help me dance like her.LOL
Oh, they didn't BTW.
I didn't get into music till the 90s. I'm all about the New Jack Swing era.
I was a lover of Prince and Micheal Jackson in the 80's but my favorite was Rick James. My older sister was in love with quiet sensitive Micheal Jackson and even back then I loved the bad boys. We were discussing the loves of our lives when I said I loved Rick James but I wouldn't hump him. My sis ran and told and my mom made me stand in the corner for hours.
But by far, I am a MJ fan. Went to the Victory tour and all. I cried in front of the TV when he did his lil concert a few years back.
I totally agree with one of the previous posters; New Jack Swing was great :) I have a varied taste in music (except for country, of course), so I don't know when it started for me. I do remember that Nasty Girl song, though! Haha. I'm impressed that you knew what it meant at five; when I was five it was just words, haha.
I love New Jack Swing music and Neo Soul. This music defined my teenage years. However, it all started with Michael Jackson for me. I loved all things Michael. I just knew that he was singing "PYT" to me, lol!
I'm so glad you posted that about Prince (love him too, btw) and the naughty songs because now I can admit that my first wet dream was about MJ. I was in my single digits as well *blush*. I didn't know what is was then but I figured it out later, lol.
"Nasty Girl" was one of my favorites too! I also liked "All Night Long" by the Mary Jane Girls.
Girl- I spent my adolescence in my room with the door closed, radio full blast, dancing to my imaginary audience. Some of my favs were "Like a Virgin" (until my mom asked my 5 year old butt if I understood what the word virgin meant-never sang it again). Paula Abdul was another one, I had a whole routine to "Blowing Kisses in the Wind" and "Cold-Hearted Snake" and just about lost my mind when Vibeology came out. OH OH and Cathy Dennis "Touch Me All Night" WOW--girl don't get me started....
I fell in love with Prince years before Purple Rain. The song that made me the most intrigued by music was "Bambi" on the Prince cd. Although I'd been into his For You album as well. That Prince cd was the first one that really got me fascinated by music. But the song "Bambi" was definitely a realization song about my seuxality. So it wasn't surprising that Vanity became my first actual "hot damn" crush. *lol*
I have a movie (VHS) with her in it that is literally a collectors item. Its called "Never Too Young to Die" it stars her, John Stamos and Gene Simmons!
Anyway, my dad was a DJ so I was into alot of stuff way before my friends from EWF to the Commodores to Herbie Hancock I was into music but Prince's Prince album was the one that really had me.
